Making a difference

The Real Junk Food Project – #feedbelliesnotbins

Fur Clemt Wigan are part of a growing ‘Real Junk Food’ movement dedicated to reducing the amount of edible food sent to land fill.  Land fill is becoming an increasing concern as nearly 15million tonnes of food is generated each year. Fur clemt aim to make really tasty nutritious food from surplus food donated by food producers and retailers.

As well as a café in Norley Hall, Wigan - they also provide food for pop-up boutiques that have the food that companies will not accept as it is within a few days of its sell by date, past its 'best before' or the product shape or colour is not up to the required standard.

This project is being embraced at Garswood and our Y5 children will be pivotal in raising the profile of this and sharing the benefits of this project - having an impact on reducing landfill. Some of our Year 5 children have already visited the warehouse base and café in Norley Hall and learnt more about this national project to share back at school. There are come photographs from their visit below. By the end of the year, we aim for all our Y5 children to have visited, to experience first-hand this innovative environmental and social project.

In support of the project, every Thursday we will be collecting food stuffs from the site in Wigan and our Y5 children will set up our own pop-up boutique – selling produce which was destined for landfill. This will be located at the front of the school. There will be no ‘price tag’ and people can give as little or as much as they want in exchange for the food. The food can range from fresh (perhaps unusually shaped) fruits & veg to packaged meals, baking goods and even choccies! We won’t know what we’ll get until it arrives. All monies received will be split between the school and the Fur clemt charity.

We will start small and if people work with us and embrace this project we will increase the amount we sell. Y5 children on a rota will help with the setting up and running of this each Thursday, though on occasion there will be an honesty box for the monetary donations and the stand won’t be attended to.

At the beginning of the year we decided our aim - for children to see the importance of playing a role in society and making a difference to others. Our involvement with this project is to support this aim and to help our children to see the difference they can make in the world and how their actions can impact on others in a positive way.

Our first pop-up was on Thursday 3rd November 2016. In good weather the items will be at the front of the school from midday and in poor weather in the Family Room from 3pm.

The children will man the stall from 3pm until 3.15pm and will help promote and support the project.
