African Masks

Lesson: Art and design

Class: Year 3 Year: 2017 - 2018

Y3 loved getting messy while learning how to manipulate Modroc. They followed their scientific African mask designs in DT to mould the Modroc into shape. The decision to create African Masks was inspired by the information we discovered when researching African White Lions. We discovered that some cultures in Africa used masks for various reasons.

Some reasons include: religious ceremonies, celebration of life and the celebration of myths and legends.

Year 3 discovered that there is an ancient African legend based on White Lions. This intrigued the children who wanted to create their own African masks. We discussed the best material fit for the job, Modroc was the clear winner.
