Transforming

Class: Nursery Year: 2017 - 2018

The children constructed together, using the crates and wooden blocks. One of the children suggested that they should make a car. After much excitied discussion with Mrs Finegan about what a car needed to have it soon began to take shape. Children added an engine, seats, 4 wheels and a steering wheel. They took turns to drive the car and decide upon destinations, going to 'the Landon' was a popular choice.

After a while one of the children then decided that the car should become a boat. One of the children made the suggestion to 'drop the wheels'. This started a whole new conversation about the similarities and differences between cars and boats.

That afternoon Mrs Cripps showed the children some clips of the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. They also looked at footage of other transforming vehicles. Freshly inspired the children raced outside to make their own transforming vehicles. Some children worked together to construct a car, then transformed it into a boat, a plane and back to a car again. When transforming a car into a boat the chidren used cushions as floatation devices under the wheels, just like they had seen in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Some other children decided to make themselves into robot vehicles, using the crates to transform themselves!

By the end of the day the children had used a whole range of construction materials to create, transform and imagine.
