Year Five:

Throughout the week, children will be taught by Mrs. Hattersley and Mrs Hunter.

Learning Environment:

The Year Five classroom is situated at the top of the Junior Corridor.  Children's learning environment suits the way they learn most effectively, small, adult led groups, discussion groupings, independent learning and questioning, interactive class participation and many more.  The classroom has an array of interactive displays and cues to help the children access resources at any time they need them, e.g. problem solving cards, dictionaries, connectives walls and grammar links. Not to mention the wall displays in each area offering strategies and clues that children can use in lessons.

Our Curriculum:

English and Maths are taught daily and are often also incorporated into other lessons. The activities we complete can be practical or written and we work hard for all children to get to the expected standard and beyond.  Our English curriculum is taught through texts, prose and poetry chosen especially to engage the readers but also to teach about grammar, punctuation, spelling and the way by which writers engage with an audience.

We learn lots, through different subjects such as history , geography, science, art and D.T and we carry out lots of hands on activities, fieldwork, research, interviews, trips etc.... to help us understand more about each area. Our Year Five curriculum plan will give you a clear indication of what topics we will be studying at various points in the year.  If you think you can provide resources or information or know someone who is an expert in that field, please feel free to let us know.  We enjoy engaging with our community to enrich the learning in school.

Weekly Information:

PE is taught twice weekly and we require a kit to be in school. We will write out to you to let you know when we will be swimming in order for you to provide a swimming kit.

Each week we have spelling, times tables, multiplication, grammar and arithmetic tests. These are designed to help the children remember. Retrieving information from our brain is a good way to help it to stay there. Revision of key facts at home will help the children prepare for the week ahead.

Homework is sent home every Friday and should be returned the following Wednesday.

Garswood Twitter account will keep you up to date with all the fun, learning, collaboration and adventures Year Five will be having throughout the year.
