Christmas

We were extremely fortunate to be able to get to the end of term and enjoy the festivities. We could hold our nativities, albeit with restrictions, live and in person. We’ve also had the benefit of holding onto usual practices this half term with assemblies, in phases; lunchtimes in the hall and mixed class activities such as Eco-council and buddies. Very different to this time last year when we had three classes at home isolating.

The nativities were lovely – from the traditional EYFS nativity “My First Nativity” to the modern twist on the tale in the infants with “Lights, Camel, Action!”. For many children, these performances were their first nativity - their first time performing on a stage for an audience. I was so proud of their effort and delighted we could share that experience with families. A huge well done to our children, who really are shining stars.

Christmas dinner was a hit. Thank you to our wonderful school cook and the kitchen staff, who did an excellent job. Our buddies helped out with our infants doing amazing work to set up and support - and we saw crackers and party hats, jokes and jingle bells. Last week, we also held a festive fire - with candy canes, hot chocolate and s’mores made from marshmallows toasted on the fire. Fittingly, a rainbow brightly shone through the dark, cloudy sky. Though the hailstones put an end to the event, and we sadly didn’t get to sing together, we did enjoy dancing along to Christmas songs playing and truly, the festive fire is one of those moments that lifts the soul. The school, all together, doing something – not because we have to - just because we want to - because actually, life is about making the best of things especially at primary school – having fun and making memories.

The fun continued this week. The panto was a good opportunity for some traditional capers! “He’s behind you!” never gets old! We also welcomed Father Christmas and his elf on his sleigh before he then made a special guest appearance at our party day! Games, gifts, dancing and singing – lots of fun was had by all.

Congratulations to our raffle winners and thank you to everyone who bought tickets. We have been able to use the money raised to pay towards some of the activities we have offered over the festive period whilst also keep the classrooms resourced for festive fun – and beyond! Everyone should have received their raffle prizes by now, though we do have one or two left in school so we hope that we can get those to you in the New Year.

The Garswood Staff, as ever, have gone above and beyond and I cannot thank them enough. Most importantly, they care enormously about each and every one of the children – and want the best for them - and I could not ask for more. As we come to the end of the term, I would like to formally extend my personal thanks to them all, who along with the Governors, have been exceptional.

On the final day we also had a lovely opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, with staff telling the Christmas story in a calm and peaceful celebration assembly. In this busy, hectic run up to the holiday we can forget that it’s the moments that make the memories and, the people you surround yourself with are the most special gifts you can ask for. Things may not always go as planned but take a breath and look for the joy in all you do.

“Enjoy the little things, as one day you’ll look back and realise they were the big things.”

Finally, thank you to our amazing community. We have received some lovely emails and cards in school and your support and encouragement, your recognition and thanks – they mean such a lot to all of us. It really is the support from families that has helped to lift our school and carry us through this COVID crisis.

So finally, as we look back on our successes, our challenges, our learning and our laughter; we also look forward with hope and with the knowledge that we have faced tough times before so no matter what comes our way – we can get through it together.

On behalf of all of the Governors, staff and children, thank you for all your support and hard work – and for your kindness. Garswood is a very special community. I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and may 2022 bring you good health and happiness.
