Mystery Maths!

Class: Year 2 Year: 2020 - 2021

Y2 came into school to find a Mystery Maths problem:

“Can you guess how many cubes are in the cup?”

The children worked in pairs to estimate and solve the problem. They began by counting 1-1 but this took too long! They decided a tens frame would help organise, but there were too many cubes. The children decided they would group the cubes in 2’s in each box. This meant the tens frame now became a 20 frame – Y2 were very excited about this! The children counted in groups of 20, 10 and 1s to check their guesses, which they later discovered this is called: Estimations!
