We are Kind- The Dementia Cafe Visit

Lesson: PSHE and citizenship

Class: Year 4 Year: 2023 - 2024

Over the last few years, I have been involved in supporting the local dementia support group- Peace of Mind Dementia Café at St Andrews Mission Hall in Garswood. In the past, the children have attended sessions at the café, supported members and their families to make decorations, play bingo, sing songs and play music instruments. They have also helped to serve cakes and enjoyed a drink and a snack too! In class, we also ensure that the children develop an age-appropriate understanding of dementia, and the impact it can have on a person and their family.

This year we have been invited back to the Dementia Café. The sessions are held on the last Tuesday of every month and we would love all the class take part in this wonderful project.

As said above, the project has shown such positivity for our children and the visitors at the café. The children developed maturity, understanding and demonstrated such a caring approach to members of the community and the members at the Café loved the support they received from the children. In the past, we also took part in fund raising events and donated the funds to Dementia UK.
