Y4 Deva Roman Experience
Lesson: History
Class: Year 4 Year: 2017 - 2018
What a first day back to the new Spring term for Y4 with a full day out at the Deva Roman Experience in Chester. The day started off with a trip in a rowing boat. Our aim was to land and invade Britain!
Once docked, we explored our fortress as a Roman soldier. We held the extremely heavy armour and were surprised at how exhausting it would have been to carry that weight around all day. Our guide, Ben, demonstrated how the Romans made bread and explained the delicacies, which we thought were really disgusting, including fish gut sauce and dormouse treats.
Next we found out about the sanitary conditions during the Roman time and were shocked to discover that they enjoyed group bathing! The Roman baths however, were beautifully decorated and we will use the mosaic inspiration for our art lessons this term.
We also had the chance to experience archaeology and uncovered some hidden clues from the Roman times. We discovered what good inventors they were but how they took their new ideas with them once they left.
After lunch, the children were transformed into Roman Soldiers, equipped with shields, and marched through the busy streets of Chester. Once we arrived at the Roman ruins, the children were taught how to battle and protect themselves. We also visited the site of an amphitheatre and experienced a soldier battle.
This has been an amazing start to our new topic for this half term and has really inspired us all to find out so much more about this fascinating period in time.
