Year 2 - Design Technology - Dips and Dippers
Lesson: Design and technology
Class: Year 2 Year: 2024 - 2025
Year 2 have had a tasty treat in DT this week. They have been tasked with planning a celebration party on the day of our Halloween Disco. The children have learnt that ‘Dips and Dippers’ can feature at gatherings and celebrations. As part of their planning task, they needed to design and make a nutritional ‘Dip and Dipper’ dish fit for our Halloween celebrations.
Their learning started by learning about different types of dips such as: Tzatziki, Thousand Island, Salsa, hummus and guacamole. They had fun analysing the dips’: appearance, smell, texture and taste. Then learnt dippers to accompany the dips: carrot sticks, pitta bread, cucumber sticks, bread sticks and peppers. They analysed these too.
The children were surprised to discover the difference between the art of tasting and eating. Their tastebuds were certainly tingling!
The children then investigated the ingredients in all the dips. They showed great knowledge when classifying which food groups each ingredient belong in. From this activity, the children were then able to rank the dips on its nutritional value (the most healthiest).
The children then made guacamole, hummus and tzatziki from scratch displaying excellent knowledge and skill how to handle a knife for chopping each ingredient.
Finally, the children had to use all their knowledge and skills to design their very own ‘Dip and Dipper’ dish for their Halloween celebrations.
