Year 2's visit to Formby Beach

Lesson: Geography

Class: Year 2 Year: 2021 - 2022

Today Year 2 visited Formby Beach as part of a field work study about the coast. Year 2 kicked off the day by investigating the Strandline  (a mark left by the high tide or a line of seaweed and other debris washed onto the beach by the tide) they collected data and organised into sorting hoops; human and physical. From this study the children concluded that more items were found from humans than natural (physical) items found. This meant that humans had the bigger impact on the coast, which has a negative effect on the coastal environment. Human presence has has resulted in the decline in the natural presence. Following this, the children collected all the human features from the strandline, leaving the wildlife and natural features behind. The main point the children took away from this activity was to never leave anything behind on the beach/coast as this will pollute the coastal environment which will result in negative effect on marine life.

Following a lovely picnic, the children set off to explore other geological features of the coast. They rolled down sand dunes while learning how they are formed; found a man made lake and observed the effects of global warming - the lake was dried up (drought like conditions), identified plains and walked though evergreen forests made up of Pine Trees - some even brought home pine cones to remember the day.

A wonderful day had by all! Thank you to our staff and wonderful helpers who made the day so enjoyable and memorable. Congratulations to Mrs H’s team for winning the best sandcastle competition!
